Rain cancels the Hamilton ODI, moving New Zealand up to second place in the Super League

The second ODI between India and New Zealand had to be abandoned on Sunday due to prolonged periods of heavy rain in Hamilton (November 27). With the Christchurch series decider scheduled for Wednesday, India maintained their lead at the top of the standings after the two teams split five Super League points each. New Zealand (125) overtook Australia (120) to claim third place.

Showers were expected to start in the afternoon but didn't materialize until the morning. Due to a damp outfield, the toss was subsequently delayed by just 15 minutes, but play started as scheduled. Michael Bracewell, a second spin option for New Zealand, was added to the lineup, while Deepak Hooda and Deepak Chahar were substituted for Sanju Samson and a Shardul Thakur who appeared to be out of shape after being seen taking a fitness test earlier in the day.

However, only 4.5 overs were delivered since New Zealand choose to bowl in order to take advantage of the cloudy weather before it started to rain. The clouds played a little game of hide-and-seek, so the play was delayed for over four hours. Upon its return, the contest had been reduced to a 29-overs-a-side affair.

After the forced break, Shubhman Gill, who had previously played some exquisite shots down the field up front, kept playing in the same position, but it was skipper Shikhar Dhawan who fell precariously while trying to boost the ante. In the abbreviated game, Suryakumar Yadav received a promotion to no. 3. Although it took him a few balls to adjust, he swiftly caught up with three bold sixes.

Before rain that was harder than the preceding spell began to fall again, only eight overs were possible. The officials only had about an hour to continue play from the time of interruption for it to be considered a match. But the umpires decided to call it off as the rain just seemed to be growing worse.

India defeated New Zealand, scoring 89/1 in 12.5 overs (Shubhman Gill scored 45 and Suryakumar Yadav had 34; Matt Henry took 1-20). (No result)
